Plate 04 / Device fleet

Nothing defends a machine that no register knows about.

Every other route on the key quietly assumes you can say what hardware exists, where it sits and what condition it is in. Across offices, depots, plants and spare bedrooms that assumption is usually wrong by a wide margin. These four lines are what make it true.

FilteringTravels with the hardware

A register is the control everything else leans on

Ask a sizeable organisation how many endpoints it owns and three systems will give three answers. N-able N-sight settles the argument: what exists, what it runs, what updates it is missing, and when it last spoke to anybody. That final field is the valuable one. Hardware silent since spring is either gone or quietly undefended, and knowing which is worth more than most dashboards.

Updating and scripted repair travel on the same agent, and so does reaching in, which means fixing something does not begin with talking a despatch supervisor through a screen share. Filtering rides along too, so the rules follow a laptop into vans, hotels and box rooms instead of stopping at the doors of a building your workforce no longer fills.

Hardware that has said nothing since spring is either gone or quietly undefended, and the difference is worth an afternoon.

Apple hardware and handsets are not a footnote

Mac estates grow sideways rather than by decision. Design, marketing, the executive floor and a good slice of sales end up on Apple hardware without anybody ever writing that down as policy, and those machines routinely hold the drawings, bids and board papers worth the most. Addigy manages them properly: profiles, baselines, software and compliance held in place rather than politely requested.

Handsets carry the same argument further. The phone reads company mail, holds the authenticator standing guard over everything else, and cheerfully joins whichever network a departure lounge is broadcasting. Zimperium does its reasoning on the handset itself, so it still works on a phone with no usable route back to anything.

Remote Monitoring and Management

Watching, updating and reaching in, through N-able N-sight

The dull line the rest of the key leans on. Hardware absent from any register cannot be defended, and a box last heard from in March cannot be brought up to date.

  • A register of what exists, how healthy it is, and which updates it still lacks.
  • Scripted repair and remote sessions, without walking somebody through a screen share.
  • Handsets and tablets managed on this same line rather than a separate contract.

Web and DNS Filtering

Web protection riding the agent already present

Rules that travel with the laptop, rather than stopping at the doors of a building half your workforce no longer walks into.

  • Rules on category and reputation hold wherever the hardware currently sits.
  • Sight of browser traffic and programmatic traffic, private windows and all.
  • Bandwidth figures, which are frequently the first truthful answer about a slow site.

Apple Fleet Management

Mac and iOS run properly, through Addigy

Apple hardware held to the same standard as the Windows estate, which stops being optional the moment design, the executive floor and a good chunk of sales are all on Macs.

  • Profiles, security baselines and compliance held continuously rather than requested.
  • Software pushed and problems repaired without anybody handing the machine over.
  • A register that survives the device being passed to its next owner.

Mobile Threat Defense

Standing guard on the handset itself

The handset reads company mail, holds the authenticator that guards the rest, and joins whatever network an airport lounge is broadcasting. It has earned the same seriousness as the laptop it replaced.

  • Judgement happens on the handset and survives having no usable connection at all.
  • Hostile apps, message lures, and rooted or jailbroken hardware all get raised.
  • Attacks on the network itself, including rogue access points and tampered sessions.

Where this plate stops

The honest edge of these 4 lines.

Written down in advance, so the question of what else the estate needs gets asked now and not in the middle of something.

  • Managing hardware is not watching it. Knowing a machine is up to date is a different fact from knowing what is executing on it. These lines make the estate visible and current. Weighing behaviour up, and acting on it, is bought on route one.
  • Filtering is not an acceptable use policy. We can enforce the categories you nominate and report on what was reached. Deciding what your workforce may look at, and defending that decision internally, stays with you and with whatever your employment terms already say.
  • Some operational hardware will refuse an agent. Line controllers, clinical equipment and older embedded systems occasionally cannot accept management software at all. Those want network separation and a different conversation, and we would rather have that conversation than bill you for something that will not install.
  • A personal handset has to be volunteered. Mobile lines reach hardware that is enrolled. Where staff carry their own phones, enrolment is a policy and consent question for you long before it is a technical question for us.
  • Nothing on this route keeps a copy. None of these four lines retains the data sitting on a managed machine. A wiped or dead device is a recovery problem, and recovery is metered on its own plate.
